Three days later we arrive at St Cergue, high up in the Jura where we are enjoying a well earned rest day (or two if the weather forecast is to be believed).
From Annecy we recovered our bikes from storage and cycled the 52km up and down and up and down with spectacular mountain and lake views. Happily every little village has a fountain or spring where you can soak your head. We arrive late and exhausted in Geneva. Luckily our wonderful warmshowers hosts Claire and Julien gave us dinner and breakfast and friends in addition to the lawn space for our tent because we had no food and the supermarkets were already closed.
In Geneva we visit the fountain, lunch in the park and then visit CERN where we learn how insignificant we are and how unfeasible the world appears. Finally a gentle rise on the map (but dastardly hilly on the ground) brings us to Echenevex on the other side of the LHC where we receive a super warm family welcome from old family friends. The boys make themselves at home and it looks like Elliot might stay.
On Friday a gentle ride takes us to Givrin and a train to the top of the mountain. Camping in the meadows overlooking Lac Leman is idyllic, at least until sunset when about 30 other people turn up! A raging campfire is not bad as consolation. Tonight’s storms should reduce the numbers.
From here the route is unclear – not wanting to repeat the Camargue incident.
Cycled: 108km
Icecreams: 9
